Merchant Benefits of Credit Cards
We have all come across in our travels and use of the financial system during our shopping outings the odd store here and there that accepts only certain forms of payment. Many places, all places actually will accept cash of course. Some will accept bank or debit cards. More will have a list of available credit cards that are open to be used, but restrict the use of certain cards. Or, and everyone may have seen this rule: “only purchases above X amount will be accepted.” Have you ever wondered exactly why that rule and those restrictions exist? It happens for a few reasons.
For merchants, using credit cards ensures their payment is valid, and they are immediately able to ascertain whether the payment will go through or not. Gone are the days of waiting it takes for checks to pass, or waiting to see if they bounce or were forgeries. Credit card usage assures them the reimbursement for what they paid for their goods. Also, many times having large amounts of cash laying around encourage or promote undesirable or underhanded employees and the employer themselves to funnel and steal cash from the drawers, or skim it off the top. Having a card negates that from happening, and keeps less floating money around. In that way, its more secure than cash is even. Merchants like it, because it makes business go faster, especially when customers dont have immediate cash on hand.
Merchants are also required to pay a fee, for the privilege or right to use credit cards at their establishment. Typically a small portion of the purchase, or a monetary amount per item, it adds up sometimes. that’s why some places have limits on how much must be spent before they will accept credit. It keeps them from losing money on small, cheap transactions. So, as long as disputes from the possessor of the card and the issuing bank are kept at a minimum, and the merchant isn’t reported to the credit agency for bad practices and exorbitant minimum purchase requirements, the process of purchase and benefit to the merchants will continue on without any bumps.
